Romania's accession to the Council of Europe

Romania became a member of the Council of Europe on October 7, 1993, concurrently with the presentation of the instrument of accession to the Status of the organization.

Acknowledging the fundamental role of the Organization in Strasbourg, Romania has become a party to 102 Conventions of the Council of Europe, and signed another 11.

Many of the judicial instruments adopted during the years under the aegis of the Council of Europe are also mandatory for the countries candidate to integration with the European Union.

Currently, Romania benefits from a good perception and credibility, at the level of the management of the organisation and of the member countries.

The Foreign Affairs Ministry assumed the firm commitment, along with the other institutions in Romania, on the line of the entire fulfillment of the still unsolved engagements.

In the medium and long run, the objectives of Romania within the Council of Europe target the following:

  • to consolidate the status of a democratic state and viable cooperation partner of the Council of Europe;
  • to shift from the status of a "receiver" of democratic assistance to that of a "supplier" state;
  • to incorporate Romania’s activities in Strasbourg into the general profile of our country in the European and Euro-Atlantic structures;

to use the institutional mechanisms of the Council of Europe in order to strengthen the economic and political cooperation in our region, with a view to consolidating the stability and security of the whole continent.
